The Passing of Mark Orr

Inspiring Artists

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride'."

— Hunter S. Thompson

The sad news came as a total surprise after my several tries to contact Mark regarding two new orders of his work. I couldn't believe it when I saw the dreadful news on his website! The artistic man has passed away! I still remember his voice on the phone, he just helped us handle several special orders only a month ago! His whimsical and fun ravens have stolen so many raven lovers' hearts. He was too young to leave! I am sure he will be missed by everybody who knows him.

Obituary

Mark Joseph Orr June 4, 1956 June 25, 2018 Our already-fragile world is decidedly poorer with the recent passing of Mark Joseph Orr....... Mark also passionately embraced roles as The Artistic Man. The Traveling Man. The Outdoorsman. The Biking Man. The Movie Star Handsome Man. The Free Spirit Man. His Own Man. Always quick to flash his (trade) Mark grin, Mark was a prolific artist. Though formally educated at Michigan State University (Bachelor of Fine Arts), his career and output were more the product of his artistic brain and insatiable bent to craft something new, something more, something challenging, something funkier, something marvelous. Mark excelled at most things he embraced, including stints as a photographer, and a maestro of just about any canvas he fixed his gaze upon. But Mark was known by most as a sculpture artistthe indomitable force behind Scavenger Art. Inspired by raven lore, infused with creative juices, and fashioned through hours of dedicated handiwork, Mark's creations endure as a legacy to the Craft and Man. Mark also leaves behind his much-loved partner, Juliana, and an eclectic and close-knit artistic community. As many have already acknowledged, mere words cannot express our feelings of the passing of Mark Orr. But Mark himself might have given it a try, perhaps offering up his favorite Hunter S. Thompson quote: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride'." What a ride, indeed. Thanks for taking so many of us along with you, Much Missed Man. Mark's family.
